6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Climb – Marangu Route

6 Days / 5 Nights on the Mountain

Plus: 2 Nights Accommodation in Arusha

overview

Known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” the Marangu Route is one of the most popular and well-established paths to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. This 6-day itinerary is ideal for climbers seeking a gradual ascent, comfortable hut accommodations, and a well-paced trek to maximize summit success.

Unlike other routes, Marangu offers cozy mountain huts instead of tents, making it a preferred choice for those looking for a more comfortable trekking experience. The trail takes you through diverse landscapes — from lush rainforest and moorland to alpine desert and the arctic summit zone.

With experienced guides, proper acclimatization, and a structured itinerary, this route provides an excellent balance of adventure and comfort, leading you to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) — the highest point in Africa.

Perfect for both first-time trekkers and seasoned adventurers, this journey promises breathtaking scenery, personal achievement, and an unforgettable experience on one of the world’s most iconic mountains.

Day 1: Marangu Gate (1980m) – Mandara Hut (2700m)

Day 1 – Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

  • Distance: 12 km
  • Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
  • Habitat: Montane Forest

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins after breakfast in Arusha, followed by a scenic drive to the Marangu Gate — the official entry point to Mount Kilimanjaro.

After completing park registration formalities, you will begin your trek through the lush montane rainforest. This beautiful section of the trail is rich in biodiversity, offering chances to spot black-and-white Colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and a variety of tropical bird species. The forest canopy provides shade as you gradually ascend along well-defined paths.

After a steady and enjoyable hike, you will arrive at Mandara Hut, nestled within the forest zone. Here, you will settle in, enjoy a freshly prepared dinner, and spend your first night on the mountain in comfortable hut accommodation.

Day 2 – Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

  • Distance: 15 km
  • Hiking Time: 6 hours
  • Habitat: Moorland

After breakfast at Mandara Hut, your journey continues as you gradually leave the dense rainforest behind and enter the open moorland zone of Mount Kilimanjaro.

The landscape transforms dramatically, revealing rolling hills covered with giant heather and unique alpine vegetation. As the trail ascends, you will be rewarded with spectacular views of Mawenzi Peak and Kibo Peak, two of Kilimanjaro’s iconic volcanic summits.

The air becomes cooler and the scenery more expansive, offering excellent opportunities for photography and appreciation of the mountain’s diverse ecosystems.

After a steady hike, you will arrive at Horombo Hut, a lively camp with stunning panoramic views. Here, you will enjoy a warm meal, relax, and spend the night as you continue to acclimatize for the higher altitudes ahead.

Day 3 – Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut

This important acclimatization day is essential for allowing your body to adjust to the increasing altitude on Mount Kilimanjaro, significantly improving your chances of a successful summit.

After breakfast, you will have the option to take a guided acclimatization hike toward Mawenzi Hut (4,600 m). This gradual ascent helps your body adapt while offering spectacular views of the rugged Mawenzi Peak and the surrounding alpine landscape.

After spending time at higher altitude, you will descend back to Horombo Hut for a hot meal, relaxation, and overnight stay. This “climb high, sleep low” approach is a proven strategy to enhance acclimatization and prepare you for the days ahead.

Day 4 – Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

  • Distance: 15 km
  • Hiking Time: 6 hours
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

After breakfast at Horombo Hut, your journey continues into the stark and dramatic alpine desert of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Today’s trek takes you across the vast saddle that lies between the towering Mawenzi Peak and the majestic Kibo Peak. This unique landscape is characterized by wide, open terrain with minimal vegetation, offering a true sense of the mountain’s raw beauty and scale.

The steady ascent leads you to Kibo Hut, the final base camp before your summit attempt. Upon arrival, you will rest, enjoy an early dinner, and receive a detailed briefing from your guide in preparation for the midnight summit push.

A good night’s rest is essential, as the next stage of your journey will take you to the roof of Africa.

Day 5 – Summit Day: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak, Descend to Horombo Hut

  • Hiking Time: 8 hours ascent / 6 hours descent

Your summit adventure begins just after midnight, as you set out under a starlit sky for the most challenging and rewarding stage of your Kilimanjaro climb on Mount Kilimanjaro.

Guided by experienced professionals, you will ascend slowly and steadily through the cold, high-altitude environment, passing key landmarks along the way:

  • Hans Meyer Cave (5,150 m)
  • Gillman’s Point (5,681 m) – located on the crater rim
  • Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) – the highest point in Africa

Reaching Uhuru Peak is a truly life-changing achievement. As the sun rises above the clouds, you will be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views — a moment of triumph you will never forget.

After celebrating at the summit, you will begin your descent back to Kibo Hut for a short rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut for a well-earned overnight stay. This marks the completion of your summit success and a significant milestone in your journey.

Day 6 – Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

  • Distance: 27 km
  • Hiking Time: 6 hours
  • Habitat: Rainforest

After breakfast at Horombo Hut, you will begin your final descent through the lush rainforest of Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail winds through dense vegetation, offering a refreshing return to the vibrant greenery and rich wildlife of the lower slopes.

Upon arrival at Marangu Gate, you will complete park formalities and receive your official Kilimanjaro summit certificate — a proud recognition of your incredible achievement.

From here, our team will transfer you back to your hotel in Arusha, where you can relax, enjoy a hot shower, and celebrate the successful completion of your journey to the roof of Africa.
